Mamble cum bayton WI 1917 - 2024
Our Curtains
In 1933 the Institute curtains were first discussed. The curtains were made for a Worcestershire Federation Handicraft Exhibition. The design was by Mrs Gurney and various members provided materials. They were made from brown Bolton sheeting.
It was a co-operative effort and Mrs Badger and Mrs Thomas were two of the chief workers. The work was carried out weekly at Shakenhurst Hall in Bayton, the home of Mrs Gurney, and where the first W.I. meeting took place in 1917.
The curtains won a Gold Star at Worcester and later went on to the London exhibition.
The above photograph shows a section of the curtains. They are certainly looked on very proudly by members and are hung for occasions such as group meetings and special birthdays.
